Deadline: Monday June 9, 2014

The third edition of IN YOUR POCKET comes in time for and as a response to Toronto’s World Pride. For SHAME, RT Collective’s curatorial motivation is the question of LGBT inclusivity – who is included in and excluded from the LGBT community. The name of the program references the Pride parties organized by artist and activist Will Munro, whose work engaged with ideas of community building and inclusivity.

For our first Pride edition, we will curate a program examining the complexities and questions surrounding Pride itself. Victories for marriage equality, anti-discrimination legislation, and anti-bullying work continue in Canada, the US, and parts of Europe. At the same time, we have a massive upswing in anti-gay legislation and actions in other parts of the world. Russia, Nigeria, Uganda, Croatia, and India are among the countries that passed anti-gay measures in the last year, ranging from banning gay marriage to instituting the death penalty for homosexual behaviour. LGBTQ people continue to be arrested, tortured, and murdered daily. As we celebrate our victories at home, how do we negotiate our responsibility in what is happening to our communities around the world?

In Toronto, Pride has grown from a small, grassroots demonstration, to a massive, corporately funded party. With increased corporatization, we have ongoing battles about which activities, bodies, and political statements should be included. The participation of groups like QuAIA (Queers Against Israeli Apartheid) and TNTMEN (a male nudist group) is debated every year. As Toronto hosts World Pride 2014, how will these debates around inclusion/exclusion happen?

Selected works will screen over June 23, 2014 at Videofag Gallery.

Selected artists will be paid CARFAC fees for the screening of their work.
