Now and Then
Deadline: September 22, 2017
Presented in collaboration with the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (CLGA) and the Gladstone Hotel with the support of the Toronto Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, Now and Then is a video art exhibition exploring how contemporary media artists can interact with LGBTQ+ histories.

A team of artists will be selected to spend a period of time examining the materials of the CLGA’s collection. Each artist will create a short video (4-5 minutes) in response to one or more items they find there. The videos will be shown as part of a month long exhibition at the Gladstone Hotel in March 2018. Artists will receive an exhibition fee of $1800.

Founded in 1973, the CLGA is the largest independent LGBTQ+ archive in the world. The collection includes thousands of periodicals, books, artworks, audio recordings, photographs, posters, and artifacts. Artists are invited to examine this space as a reservoir for our communities’ histories; honouring and celebrating, questioning and critiquing these histories, how they are preserved, and how these ideas can inform our individual and collective understanding of our pasts, presents, and futures.

  • Artists must be based in Canada.
  • Individual artists or collaborative teams of 2 or more artists can be considered.
  • Artists are encouraged to work with accessible video technologies such as smartphones, iPads, and webcams.
  • The research/creation process will take place from October 2017 to January 2018.
  • Artists are not expected to work this entire period—this is just the phase during which they will have access to the archives.
  • The RT Collective cannot fund travel to Toronto for the research process and/or exhibition. However we can assist artists in securing funding and/or accommodations for this period.

  • Proposals must be submitted via email using the attached form.
  • All requested documents must be sent as email attachments (no Google Drive, WeTransfer, etc.) and in Word or PDF format only (no .pages, .txt, etc.)
  • Proposals must include the artist(s) CV(s) (2 pages max) as an attachment.
  • Proposals must include a link to one previously created video work. The jury will watch a maximum of 4 minutes.
  • First time video makers are welcome. In the event you have never made a video, include a link to some other artistic project you have previously created.
  • Proposals received after the deadline will not be accepted.
  • Deadline for proposals: September 22, 2017.
  • Selected artists will be notified by September 29, 2017.
